MOVABLE CLIMBABLE BLOCKS

By Aza

There is a prj project map to accompany this tutorial and the files can be downloaded here:

There are many variations of the combination of rooms you could use to make a movable climbable block with flip maps. The explanation below is how to achieve the effect using only 4 flip rooms.

The first thing you need is a square movable block and the textures of the block to use in your TGA.

The two grey tiles on the right of the picture are the same as the textures on the movable block.

Let's start!

Make a one square room that is 4 left clicks high; floor 0 ceiling 4, for example. We shall call this room the HUB room.

Make another one square, 4 left clicks high, room and lower it until it has a floor of –4 and a ceiling of 0. This is room 1.

Move this room under the HUB room.

Click back on the HUB room and join both rooms together with a door on the floor of the HUB room.

Get back into the HUB room, select the door portal, and apply toggle opacity, (not toggle opacity 2) to the floor.

On top of the toggle opacity put a heavy trigger for flip map 1 ( one ).

I have called these flip maps 1 but you may use any number you please except zero. There may be problems with the flip rooms numbered 0 (zero) if, somewhere in your level, you have a switch with no trigger under it.

Make another one square room that is 4 left clicks high; floor 0 ceiling 4, place it to the SOUTH of the HUB room in the 2D map window. This is room 2.

Click on the floor and then click on the green wall button that is below the plan view grid window.

This room is now a solid block.

Now connect this room to the hub room.

Make another room exactly the same and connect it to the NORTH of the HUB room. This is room 3.

Now you need a 1 by 3 room which is 3 left clicks high. Floor 1, ceiling 4. Place this room to the WEST of the HUB room.

Click on the middle right hand wall square and make a door to the HUB room. This is room 4.

Make another 1 by 3 room with the floor at 0 and the ceiling at 4.

Place this room to the EAST of the HUB room.

Click on the middle left hand wall square and make a door to the HUB room. This is room 5.

Now make another room that is 3 by 3 with the floor at 4 and the ceiling at 8. Position this room over the 5 rooms you have just built.

On the squares above rooms 2 and 3 click on the green wall button.

You now need to make 3 doors to rooms below. One to room 4, one to room 5, and one to the Hub room.

Texture and adjust the lighting in these 6 rooms.

Now connect any rooms you want to 4 of the 6 rooms you have built.

Don't connect any extra rooms to room 1; and you cannot connect any to the HUB room.

You need to connect the rooms now as you cannot connect new rooms to flipped rooms.

Time to flip the rooms.

Select the HUB room and click on the F button that is located directly below the grid view window plan.

This button will now turn black and the number 0 will be in the window next to it. Click in the little window with the number 0 in it, delete the 0, type in the number 1 then press the Enter key on your keyboard. Do this in all the rooms that are to be flipped.

Notice also that the background in the main window has also turned black.

NEVER save any work in progress or output your WAD while in flipped mode!!!!!

You will notice that the toggle opacity between the Hub room and the room below has disappeared. This is the where the movable block drops down out of the way, so leave it like this.

Click on the long grey flip map button that is located under the plan view grid. The background in the main window should now be white again.

Go to room 4 and click on the F button that is located directly below the grid view window plan again. Don’t forget to change the 0 to a 1.

Click on the door portal to the HUB room and apply toggle opacity; the portal should turn red.

Apply the block texture from your tga to this portal; it should only be a three quarter texture.

Apply the block texture from your tga to this portal, this time it should be a full square texture.

Click on the long grey flip map button that is located under the plan view grid again.

Save your project and output the wad as normal to check if it all works ok. If it doesn’t work then check the list below to see if you have forgotten anything.

Things to check...

Make sure that all the rooms that are to be flipped have the same number. In this example the number is 1.

Check that when in flipped mode the toggle opacity from the HUB room to room 1 is gone. Room 1 is where the movable block will drop into when the rooms are flipped.

Make sure that the trigger for the flip rooms is set to 'heavy'.

Ensure that you have connected any extra rooms you need to the rooms that are to be flipped.

Have fun experimenting...Aza
